Resources

There is a wide range of eye conditions that can cause a vision impairment. Included in this resource section are videos and readings about various eye conditions. Some of these eye conditions can have associated medical issues and complications, therefore if you would like to know about these, or a particular eye condition that is not below, please get in contact. Additionally, if you have resources to share we are always open to suggestions.

CVI and Child Development
Cortical, Cerebral and Neurological vision impairments are also known as CVI. The above video is of a young girl displaying CVI symptoms and additional impairments. CVI can sometimes be overlooked initially due to the fact that the child's eyes are healthy. Damage in the visual cortex of the brain can cause CVI and when the visual messages go via the optic nerve to reach the visual part of the brain, the problems present. Depending on the Ophthalmologist, they do diagnose CVI but a Neurologist can also diagnose CVI.

This video above is another example of a child with a CVI plus additional impairments. Important to take into consideration at all times when attempting to gain a vision response, positioning is so important. If it requires too much of the child's physical energy to sit or stay straight, etc., the responses will be limited.
This footage provides a clear picture of the work that is put into crawling for a young baby and for those who question why their child is not crawling yet. If there is a child who may have a mild form of Cerebral Palsy or another physical limitation, watching how the arms and legs working together may explain the reason for the delay, A child with a vision impairment often will be delayed in their movement because they don't have as much motivation to move if they are limited in what they see ahead. The team working with the child can provide ideas for encouraging more movement in the 'reluctant crawler'.

Typical Vision
